Willys United States

In 1908 constructor John Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of Standard Wheel Company and in 1912 renamed it to Willys-Overland Motor Company. From 1912 to 1918, Willys was the second largest producer of automobiles in the United States losing only to Ford Motor Company. The range of cars offered by the company was quite wide - from family saloons to luxury cars, but when the depression era started they switched to production of smaller, economical cars. On the verge of World War 2 the company won the War Department contract for production of light trucks for the army - production of Willys Jeep (together with Ford Motor Company) was their finest hour. After war they struggled to return to production of passenger cars and tried to convert the use of Jeeps in civilian field. In 1950s they tried to return to market with Willys Aero, but even though several versions were available the sales were not great. Soon the company was taken over, the production was continued only in Brazil and after several changes of the ownership the Willys as trademark has disappeared.
