Smokey and the Bandit (1977, United States)Running time: 95 minutes
Language: English Big Enos and his son Little Enos are running a smuggling business hiring drivers to illegally transport alcohol between the states. When their new drivers are busted they are looking for someone to replace him. And who could be better than washed-out former legendary trucker, the famous Bandit? They offer him $80,000 to haul 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta within 28 hours. Desperate for money Bandit accepts the challenge and recruits his best friend and partner Cledus "Snowman" Snow to drive the truck while he will be driving his black Pontiac Trans Am as "blocker" - finding the safe way for the truck or gather the attention of Smokey (CB slang for highway patrol officers, referring to the Smokey Bear–type hats) so they would leave Snowman alone. The trip to Texarkana went without problems, they loaded the beer and headed towards Atlanta. On the way back Bandit picks up a hitch-hiker wearing bride’s dress. Unfortunately it turns out that this particular bride has just left at the altar son of local sheriff Buford T. Justice. Sheriff pursuits the Trans Am with bride inside inadvertently chasing adter the bootleg alcohol.
Classic comedy, first of the series, that presented the character of Bandit and his later legendary black Pontiac Trans Am. Directed by Hal Needham, former stuntman, the film was really centered around the cars and the stubborn chase of sheriff after the Bandit. Great cast, some nice chase scenes and good atmosphere - one of the most enjoyable car movies.
